Novokuznetsk Drama Theatre – “One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich” (5. National Academic Theatre / Black Box)

From: Novokuznetsk, Russia
Director: Eduard Shakhov
Choreographer: Daniil Nagaitsev
Genre: Drama
Duration: 60 min
Just as it was 85 years ago, the Novokuznetsk Drama Theatre /1933/ today is not only an acting space, but also a “cultural factory” for the big industrial city. Through modern performances, educational projects, workshops, and festivals, Novokuznetsk’s drama exists in a modern Russian theatrical context, constantly reminding of itself, fostering an appreciation of art, and developing along with the audience.
“One day has passed, one day without a shadow over, almost a happy one. And there were three thousand six hundred and fifty-two such days in Ivan’s sentence”.
The play “One Day in The Life of Ivan Denisovich”, based on the novel by Alexander Solzhenitsin, shows us one day (one of many) in the life of a Soviet prisoner. This one day contains all the hell of the Soviet repressive system which dehumanized convicts as well as their guards.
In the ascetic scenography, through the plasticity, contrasting sounds of clinking iron spoons, plates, and glasses, the creators and the actors tell the audience the story about the fight to save humanity.
